If you want to build a lucrative email newsletter business that pays you 10k per month or more...

One key metric is:

Earnings per subscriber.

This is calculated by taking how much revenue your newsletter generates each month and dividing it by your total (or active) subscribers.

And obviously, the higher the better.

But this value is dictated by two things:

- your monetization model 
- your copywriting skills

For example, if you monetize via sponsorships...

You're constrained by market standards.

Sponsorships are typically negotiated on a CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) basis...

And a $50 CPM would be considered a medium to high rate, depending on the quality of your audience.

So if you've got 10k subscribers with a 50% open rate...

That's 5,000 impressions.

Multiply that by a $50 CPM and you get $250.

So that's basically the cap on how much you can charge for a single ad slot in your newsletter.

If you're mailing once a week, that's 4x ad slots per month and $1,000 in total monthly revenue.

But if you divide $1,000 by 10,000 subscribers...

You get an earnings per subscriber of $0.10.

Not great.

Safe to say you won't be flying first class.

(Or even checking a bag lol)

On the flipside...

When I was managing email for Closers.io ($40m a year sales training & consulting company)...

Two of our three newsletters would routinely generate a million per month in revenue from ~30,000 active subscribers or less.

Earnings per subscriber = $33.33.

(You can bet the CEO Cole Gordon flies private)

What's the difference?

There were several, of course...

But one big one was that we used story-driven newsletters to monetize by selling higher ticket info products to our subscribers.

The margins are much higher...

And you aren't nearly as constrained by what everyone else is charging.

In fact, based on my experience, story-driven newsletters yield the highest earnings per subscriber out of any newsletter setup.

Assuming your copywriting skills are up to snuff, that is.
